Music and Me

 Current go- - to music

My current go to music is kind of all over the place. It ranges anywhere from Indie, to alternative, to 80s metal. A large majority of my music tastes I've picked up originally from my brother and it’s just expanded over time. There’s of course those few songs I'll find on my own through different sources or media I'm interested in, whether they be songs from movies, shows, or even based on video games. Some artists I've been into recently are “Djo” ((Joe Keery,, Indie Rock Band,, 2019)) and “Iron maiden” ((Metal,, 1975)). I feel like the reason my music taste can be so drastic is typically based on my mood. I tend to be closed off with my music taste but the songs i do tend to share with people, I've been told are good to listen to when it’s raining. Other than that I think a lot of the music I've picked up from my dad and brother growing up and hearing all the time on road trips.

Djo - Chateau (Feel Alright)

Iron Maiden - Invaders

Personally meaningful music

As weird as it might sound, a lot of meaningful music to me would have to be Alternative rock ((specifically “emo” music)). I am someone who tends to dress in a more alternative style ((when I'm not in a softball uniform)) and I mainly have my brother to introduce me to more alternative bands. Me and my brother didn’t get along well growing up because we have quite an age gap ((6 years)) which was challenging when we were younger. As we got older and became more comfortable with each other and opened up more we began to hang out frequently. It started out as more joking about my since of style in comparison to the rest of my family so he decided to introduce me to more “emo bands” like “Pierce the Veil” ((Alternative Rock,, 2006)) as well as encourage my obsession with “My Chemical Romance” ((Alternative Rock,, 2001))  at the time. Two songs I'll always associate with our sporadic road-trips to the store or gym together are “King For A Day” ((Pierce the Veil)) and “The Drug in Me is You” ((Falling in Reverse,, Alternative Rock,, 2008)). I always remember screaming these songs together in the car and it’s always something I’ll cherish.

Music I don't connect with

I feel like this isn’t a surprise to people who know me but I'm not the biggest fan of country music. I don't know what it is about it that just doesn't click well with my head but I always get so upset when I hear it. I don’t know if it’s the way I grew up with most of my family being from the south or what, but I'm just not a fan. My dad has one of his ringtones set to “Tennessee Whisky” ((Chris Stapleton,, 2015)) and each time it rings I just don’t have a fun time. Each time I'm in the car with him we both agree on metal bands to avoid this conflict.

  1. Hey Rylee! I am so so glad that I read your blog! I swear I always am forgetting that Falling in Reverse is a thing. I tend to forget how much I used to listen to them in middle school. I can 100% understand not liking country music. I tend to have to be in a country mood to even listen to any of it. My dad has one of those country songs as his ringtone as well. It's some cheesy love song that he has set for my mom.

  2. I appreciate that the music you don't like has a backstory. Most people despise country music for a variety of reasons, but you have your own personal reasons. I'd like to learn more about your musical tastes since I feel I would enjoy what you do. I really liked a lot of the songs you posted here! Chateau scratches my brain:)

  3. Hi Rylee :) I can definitely relate with musical taste being everywhere - so is mine! With that information, I enjoy Djo's music too! Although I don't listen to them too much, the times I've heard their music, I enjoy it. Their music is definitely soothing and a chill vibe to relax with. Second, I love alt rock too :) Kellin Quinn is someone I really like, as his voice is so unique and distinct; I love it. I also like BMTH (Bring Me the Horizon) especially. Alt punk/rock is a genre I can personally connect with too, as my older sister (who I wouldn't get along with) would play it and I would secretly bop my head along to it too. I love how you connect good memories of your brother with the genre as well, it's very special.
